Save Me

This song deals with suicide, with the one considering suicide crying out for help, to be saved. Shinedown vocalist Brent Smith wrote the song from personal experience about people who take on everyone else's problems and issues. "When they put that much pressure on themselves, they're going to hit a wall eventually," he told Audio Ink Radio. "A person in my life saw me go through the darkest times in life. They picked me up. Eventually they had that dark time and I had to pick them up."

This spent 12 weeks at #1 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Chart. It was Shinedown's first ever chart-topper on that tally.

Brent Smith told Billboard "Save Me" was one of the very last songs written for Us and Them. He said he originally wrote the chorus and first verse when he was 16 years old and beginning to make demo tracks. One day, close to the end of the Us and Them recording sessions, Shinedown's producer Tony Battaglia heard Smith messing around with this tune. It immediately attracted his attention, and he asked the singer to play it for him properly. "I showed it to him and he literally stopped everything, kind of called everybody back in the next morning," Smith said. "That night, me and Tony sat there and kind of hashed it out."
