This song has a comparable melody to Marvin Gaye's classic number "Sexual Healing." Miguel acknowledged the similarities between the two tracks by including Gaye and his co-writer Odell Brown on the "Pineapple Skies" credits. Speaking with MTV News' Gaby Wilson, Miguel explained he made the decision, as he wanted to acknowledge Gaye's influence: "To be influenced is an amazing, amazing part of music and to have it in your DNA. It only felt right to obviously reach out and say, 'Hey, this is like completely inspired, you know it's inspired [by 'Sexual Healing.']' It's something that we pull from, you know, and out of respect. It's just a respect thing."
The song first debuted on Snoop Dogg's YouTube series "Double G News Network" (aka. GGN).
