Although it is not historical folk rock, this is a song Al Stewart would not have been ashamed to write. "The Mexican" was actually written by Alan Shacklock, lead guitarist with Babe Ruth. It is based loosely on early 19th Century Texas, which was owned by Spain from 1690-1821, becoming part of Mexico until 1836. The Battle of the Alamo and the Texas Revolution resulted in Texas becoming a sovereign state until 1846. After his tenure with Babe Ruth, Shacklock went on to become a record producer and to compose scores for films. In spite of success and recognition in this more formal field, "The Mexican" is obviously dear to his heart, and greeted visitors to his official website when it was extant.
