Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Matrimony. By Songfacts®.

There are plenty of wedding songs, but this is the only one we know of that's about getting married at the registrar's office to save money; sometimes pragmatism trumps love. "I know how you've dreamt about being walked down the aisle," O'Sullivan tells his potential bride. "But think of the money we'll save." The song is not based on real-life events. "I'm a good Catholic boy," O'Sullivan told Songfacts. "I would never get married outside the church." According to a July 1995 interview with the Daily Mail, O'Sullivan did not marry until January 1980, although he met his future wife in 1973.

Pronounced mat-ri-mo-nee, this 1972 release on the MAM label was backed by the curiously titled "January Git." Running 3:18, it was recorded at Audio International Studios, London, and produced by Gordon Mills. "Matrimony" also appears on the August 1971 album Himself. A live version recorded at Nakano-Sunplaza, Tokyo, was released on a CD album in August 1993.
