Stuck Like Glue

This is the first single from the country duo Sugarland's fourth studio album, The Incredible Machine. Sugarland's Kristian Bush and Jennifer Nettles wrote the song with Kevin Griffin and Shy Carter. "'Stuck Like Glue' definitely holds the crown of levity on the record," exclaimed Nettles. Explaining how the song came together, the female half of Sugarland told us: "It was one of the couple of songs that Kristian and I co-wrote with other writers on this record. Kevin actually approached us with the song, and we listened to it and thought, 'Yeah,' because he was thinking, 'This kind of sounds like the stuff that you guys do.' And we definitely wanted some levity on the record, and when we listened to it we thought, 'Yeah, yeah, I think this is a great direction.' And so we wrote the second verse, we wrote the bridge. And it ended up being such a moment of fun even during the shows – we play it in our live show, of course, now that it's on the radio. And it's really fun, you know? I love the reggae breakdown in it, and musically it's just a kick to sing it." (Check out our full interview with Jennifer Nettles.)

The song has some unexpected reggae beats in the middle. While Jennifer Nettles says the reggae break felt natural in the song, including it was also part of what she feels is Sugarland's goal of widening the audience for country music, as she's always trying to bring people into the genre. She told us regarding the reggae part: "That was mine and Kristian's contribution. We wrote that bridge, and we wanted to do a sort of a spoken word thing. I'm not a rapper, but I'm a singer, and so the reggae/dance hall style is much more melodic. It lends itself as a 'spoken word' to something that's more sing-songy. And so I was just attracted to it, and naturally leaned into that. And it ended up being a whole lot of fun."

In the song's music video, Nettles plays a crazy stalker, Kristian Bush is her henchman and actor Ryan McPartlin, who portrays Devon Woodcomb (aka "Captain Awesome") in the NBC series Chuck is the object of her affections. Nettles told The Boot that she likens her video persona to the Dolores Umbridge character from the 2007 film Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. She said: "Everything is all sweet and colorful [with] pinks and reds and puppies and unicorns and stuff, and yet she is crazy and deranged, which makes it even creepier. It was fun to play."
