Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Hyacinth House. By Songfacts®.

Hyacinthus was a young love of the Greek God Apollo. Apollo accidentally killed him, and from his blood sprang the hyacinth, a plant with a fragrant cluster of flowers.

The line, "I see the bathroom is clear" could refer to the bathroom in the studio where the song "L.A. Woman" was recorded. At the time, Jim Morrison insisted on recording the vocal track remotely from the bathroom rather than in the studio with the rest of the band.

The song was written at guitarist Robby Krieger's house, which inspired some of Morrison's lyrics with flowers (hyacinths) and cats (lions). "We had a big glass wall, and lots of hyacinths growing in the yard outside and the cats were running among them – the lions in the lyric," Krieger recalled to Louder Sound. "We also had a pet bobcat – a lynx. It wasn't legal but we'd found it in a pet store." "We recorded an acoustic demo in my home studio with guitar and tom-toms," he added. "It was just a fun song based on the afternoon's activities, but Jim's words gave it a mysterious appeal."
