Solana Rowe is an American singer-songwriter from Maplewood, New Jersey who is better known as SZA. She first met members of Top Dawg Entertainment, the record label housing rappers Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q and their Black Hippy crew, during the CMJ 2011. A friend attending the show with her persuaded TDE president Terrence "Punch" Henderson to listen to some of her material, which he liked. In July 2013 it was announced that SZA was the first R&B act on the TDE roster.
SZA recorded much of her debut Z album in Carson, California during the summer of 2013, where she shared accommodation with labelmate Rashad. The pair became friends and collaborated on each other's songs. SZA sang the hook on Rashad's 2013 single "Ronnie Drake" and Rashad returned the favor on this Mac Miller co-produced track. "Him and all his producers would kick open my door in the morning and jump on the bed and light blunts at 9 AM," SZA recalled to Billboard magazine. "Now we're each other's security blanket, in a way. We just get each other really well."
