"Me And The Devil Blues" was recorded Sunday, June 20, 1937 at Dallas, one of only 29 songs in the five sessions that Robert Johnson recorded in his short life.
Like the Italian violinist and composer Niccolò Paganini before him, Johnson is reputed to have sold his soul to the Devil for proficiency at his instrument, which is all the explanation this song needs. The reference to beating his woman until he is satisfied is probably best not explained.
