Lead vocalist and guitarist Clemens Rehbein explained the song's meaning to The Independent. "The inspiration for 'Bad Things' came from a feeling of finding yourself repeatedly stuck in the same kind of situation," he said. "It's a tiring, going-around-in-circles-tragedy. In the end it's always up to you to find the way out, but this song is a shout out to that person who's always there whilst you work it out."
The song features BRITs Critics' Choice nominee Izu Bizu. The Milky Chance duo first met the British singer at a festival and struck up a friendship before putting the track together.
The video finds the Milky Chance pair strolling down a street at night, contrasted with footage of Izzy Bizu walking the same path the next morning.
