Brett Young sings of enjoying a low-key night out at the bar with his friends, when in walks a woman, who immediately catches his attention. You got me doing double takes You went and messed up all my plans I only meant to hold this drink Now I'm trying to hold your hand The song is about love showing up when least expected. Young told Taste of Country: "I think it's opposite of what we're used to, where a guy goes into a bar not trying to meet a girl and gets blown away by accident."
Young wrote the simple, acoustic number with Ross Copperman and Ashley Gorley. They use the title as a play on words throughout the song, starting with Young's plans to catch a buzz and a game at the bar, while catching up with his friends. Once the woman catches his eye, it causes him to catch his breath then he sets out to try to catch her name.
Brett Young explained that the song is a deviation from the familiar story of a girl out with her girlfriends with no intention of meeting a guy. "We just thought it was kind of a fun twist on it - the guy going out to spend time with his buddies, and ends up seeing a girl and the rest is history," Young told Nash Country Daily. "And so it's a fun one for me, and the play on words with 'catch,' but also me having spent so much of my life playing baseball."
