Thomas Rhett grew up on Center Point Road, a street that runs 20 minutes north of Nashville in a suburb called Hendersonville. On this nostalgic track, Rhett takes us back in time to growing up carefree in the small Tennessee town. We wrote our own destiny In parking lots and empty streets We got high on you and me Jumped over cracks beneath our feet When growing up was just a dream And Friday night was everything Rhett told ABC Radio: "'Center Point Road' to me is very nostalgic. It's about being young and thinking 'This is as complicated as life is ever going to get,' not realizing one day you move on to the next chapter and it comes at you quickly."
The song is a duet with Rhett's fellow country superstar Kelsea Ballerini. Together the pair trade memories of young love. "Kelsea and I have been good friends for years now," Rhett said, "and with her growing up similarly in a Tennessee town, I knew she would relate to what we were writing about. She absolutely nailed it."
Rhett co-wrote "Center Point Road" with Jesse Frasure, Amy Wadge and Cleve Wilson. Rhett told Billboard: "Amy Wadge wrote 'Thinking Out Loud' [with] Ed Sheeran so she's a very good nostalgic songwriter. She helped me take those memories and shape them into what now is 'Center Point Road.' It's tough trying to condense your memories into a three-minute song, but if you can do it well, it makes people feel the emotion that you are trying to make them feel when you wrote it in the first place."
