This song is about the end of a relationship. It finds Swindell lamenting of how the girl left him in the "Middle of a dance floor all alone, in the middle of an old school country song." Swindell commented, "Songs like 'Broke Down,' 'Middle of a Memory'... I'm so proud I wrote those, because those are real things that I think we've all been through, and this album is, whether it's fun or not so fun, I hope it's real to everybody."
Swindell wrote "Middle of a Memory" with Zach Crowell and Ashley Gorley. Crowell and Gorley's other collaborations include Scotty McCreery's "See You Tonight" and Carrie Underwood's "Heartbeat."
Cole Swindell explained in the "Story Behind the Song" video that the lyrics are "about being out meeting somebody you're into … and then all of a sudden she gets taken away from her friends." He added: "It's just a lot of what could have been, should have been."
