Trivia

Interesting facts about Nineties. By Songfacts.

This nostalgic track finds Busted namechecking bands from the 1990s such as Oasis, Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins. They also reference other cultural icons from the 20th century's last decade such as "ditching school to watch The Goonies" and praying they'd meet Saved by the Bell character Kelly Kapowski.

This was the song that gave Busted the sound they were looking for on their fourth studio album, Half Way There. Band member Charlie Simpson told Billboard they'd started experimenting with different styles over the summer of 2017, but it was only when they wrote "Nineties" that they knew they'd found their sound. He said: "We got excited about bringing heavy guitars back because all we were hearing on the radio was electronic music."

The song's music video was directed by the Scottish photographer Rankin, who is known for his fashion work and celeb portraits. The clip finds the band referencing different pop culture icons from the '90s, including Nirvana, Top of the Pops, Fresh Prince and Gladiators. It even sees them referencing the visual for their debut single, "What I Go To School For." Busted first collaborated with Rankin in 2004 when doing press shots for Band Aid 20. He also shot the cover for their Half Way There album.
