The original meaning of "saving grace" is the free and unmerited love and favor of God that "saves" a sinner from the eternal consequences of their sin. Over the years, the phrase has come to be used broadly to reference any good thing that redeems a negative experience. Here, Kodaline's Steve Garrigan promises a loved one that whatever trials and tribulations they face, he will always be by their side and be their "saving grace."
Kodaline released the song as the third single from One Day at a Time during the coronavirus pandemic. The band announced the track through a YouTube livestream performance to promote staying home and quarantining. Garrigan told The Sun newspaper: "It felt like a good song to release during the lockdown, as its message is about being there for each other and supporting each other through difficult times."
Kodaline used various producers from outside the band for their previous album, Politics of Living, but they chose the internal option for One Day at a Time; bassist Jason Boland is the man behind the boards.
