Status Quo frontman Francis Rossi wrote this song with Bob Young, who while never an official member of the band, was their road manager and contributed to the songwriting. The song is about a girl who has left a hole in the singer's heart, but it didn't start out that way - the original lyric was "England made a fool out of me."
Many Status Quo songs, especially the ones written by Francis Rossi, feature women - often heartbreakers. "Claudie" was a name Rossi and Bob Young made up to fit the melody, but she was based on real people. In our interview with Rossi, he explained: "In my mind it was my ex-wife, and in Bob's mind, it was his wife. And in the middle ground here is this relationship between two people who we imagined as just two people."
