This R&B-influenced slow-jam was written by FGL's Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley with co-writers Nicole Clawson and Jordan Schmidt at Hubbard's farm late one fall.
The song was partially inspired by a 1987 Nitty Gritty Dirt Band hit tune. "I had told Jordan to make kind of a modern day 'Fishin' in the Dark' track, and he showed up with that…" Brian Kelley recalled to ABC Radio. "Nicole had the title for 'Smooth'…" he continued, "and I remember Tyler came in with that hook on the chorus, 'Good Lord Almighty'. And that kind of got us going down the chorus. We just wrote real hard that day and had a lot of fun."
The track was released as the fourth single from Florida Georgia Line's Dig Your Roots album. It also became the name of the band's summer 2017 Smooth Tour.
