Dermot Kennedy wrote this song with Scott Harris and Stephen "Koz" Kozmeniuk, the same pair he penned his breakthrough single "Outnumbered" with.
The writing of "Power Over Me" proved to be a novel experience for Kennedy as the trio started with the hook and title phrase - something he had never done before. They then set out to build the rest of the song around that sentiment. The three ended up with a lyric about a girl Kennedy is so enamored with, it's as if he's under her spell. He explained to Line Of Best Fit: "The main idea behind this song is just that thought of being totally in awe of somebody. Where someone controls your mind and your thoughts, but in the most positive way."
Kennedy told Apple Music that starting with the chorus felt "quite jarring" to begin with, but he got into it. As he relaxed, he came up with some ad-libs, such as the "woo!" after the penultimate hook, "which was a completely natural moment."
