This song is about a girl who is in a relationship where she gives more than she receives - she feels like her boyfriend doesn't give her all the love that she wants and deserves. She tries to ignore these feelings, but it hurts. She doesn't want to leave him because she loves him, so she's asking her boyfriend to give her his whole heart and be fully dedicated to making her happy.
Stefani wrote this with her former boyfriend and No Doubt bandmate Tony Kanal. In a promotional video released by her record company, Stefani said the song was inspired by ballads "Killing Me Softly With His Song" and "Eyes Without A Face."
Stefani says in the Daily Mail September 28, 2007: "Tony was the first person I worked with after (her child) Kingston was born. There was a lot going on in my life emotionally at the time and I wanted to reflect that."
