Chvrches first release since their 2015 second album Every Open Eye, "Get Out" finds the band collaborating with Greg Kurstin. The American producer is best known for his work with pop acts such as Kelly Clarkson ("What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)"), Adele ("Hello") and Sia ("Cheap Thrills").
The synth-driven jam was premiered on Annie Mac's BBC Radio 1 on January 31, 2018. Speaking to Annie Mac, Chvrches frontwoman Lauren Mayberry said: "After [Every Open Eye], we went back into a little writing studio – this time in New York – but we still wanted to take a little time to work out where we wanted to go and what we wanted to do. We decided this time we wanted to work with a producer. I think it was really good for us to be pushed to do things differently and take risks."
The song finds Mayberry singing about wanting to end a relationship. We talked ourselves to death Never saying what I wanted Never saying what I needed I pushed you to the edge Never knowing what I wanted Never knowing what I needed you to say Chvrches said: "Working with Greg was so different to what we'd done before, but it also felt so comfortable and like he'd been in our band forever. He doesn't try to make you write a certain kind of song. He just listens and then Jedi puppet masters the best work out of you." They added: "The opening synth riff of 'Get Out' was the first thing to emerge on our first day in the studio with him."
