Europe vocalist Joey Tempest and keyboardist Mic Michaeli wrote this power ballad in 1985. A early version that included only keyboards and vocals was played on a tour in Sweden the same year, but the final version features the band playing as a whole.
We always wondered if there was a real Carrie, and in 2015 lead singer Joey Tempest told us there wasn't. "We were young then, the normal breaking up and finding a new girlfriend," he said in describing the inspiration. "It was more of a general thing, actually."
The song was the third of Europe's four Top 40 entries on the US Hot 100. It was their most successful song across the Atlantic, peaking at #3. However, Europe are far better known in most territories for "The Final Countdown," which topped the charts in 25 countries.
