This song about being on the edge of some great change finds Michael Franti talking about various political crusades such as the Occupy movement and the LGBT community's struggle for equality. The singer told Radio.com he believes we've reached the tipping point. "In life and in the world right now we're on this precipice for lots of issues," said Franti. "So the metaphor 11:59 is right at that stroke before midnight. What are we going to do? What is going to happen? What's the next step? What's the next thing?"
Franti wrote this song with The Matrix, which is the Canadian production team of Graham Edwards, Lauren Christy and Scott Spock. Hits written by the team include "Complicated" by Avril Lavigne and "The Remedy (I Won't Worry)" by Jason Mraz. The Matrix also produced "11:59" and co-wrote/produced another song on the album: "On and On."
