Dodie wrote this song about her excitement when embarking on a new relationship. She wanted to write about the deep connection and fascination that love brings. Oh, I'm so human We're just human Dodie explained to Genius that she sings about feeling "so human" as "it just felt so organic to feel this connection and explore this connection." She added that "the whole song is looking inside and showing souls, but also being aware of being human, a capsule of something beautiful."
The original version of the song was recorded by Dodie with American YouTube musician Jon Cozart with only a ukulele for instrumentation. This rendition was released on July 23, 2016. Dodie re-recorded the song in spring 2018 with Tom Walker as the featured male vocalist. The singer explained to Genius that she listened to Walker's song "Leave a Light On" and was attracted to the "husk and deep, gruffness to his voice," which was what she was looking for in "Human."
The song was the title track of Dodie's Human EP which rose to #5 on the official UK Albums Chart in January 2019.
