Many of the Bronx MC's fans believe that both this track and "Be Careful" address the suggestions of infidelity in Offset's relationship with Cardi.

Cardi B co-wrote the song with pop songwriter Justin Tranter who has also co-penned hit tunes for the likes of Hailee Steinfeld ("Love Myself"), Justin Bieber ("Sorry") and Selena Gomez ("Good For You"). Tranter was thrilled to be a part of Invasion of Privacy. "She is the world right now - Cardi B is the world," the writer told Billboard following the record's release. "To get to be a part of her album is so amazing. 'Thru Your Phone' turned out so special and so different from the rest of her album - it's just crazy, crazy exciting."

The song is based on a painful experience that once happened to Tranter when a serious relationship he was involved in was nearing the end. Tranter suspected his boyfriend was being unfaithful, so he decided to investigate. "I went through his phone when he was in the shower and found what I knew I was going to find," he recalled to MTV News. "He was cheating." Tranter suggested the songwriting idea to his co-writers Andrew Watt, Benny Blanco, and Ali Tamposi, They penned the track's pre-chorus and chorus and left the verses open for Cardi to do her thing.
