Stevie Wonder was an early fan of Janelle Monáe, and this interlude was inspired by a conversation between them. Monáe explained to Billboard: "Stevie Wonder has inspired me my entire life, ever since I was a little baby. It's an honor and a pleasure to be able to have him as a mentor. We talk about a lot of things, from religion to politics. He actually asked me to record a conversation where he was giving some advice on how to deal with your oppressor. How do you deal with somebody who may not love you? How do you need to respond to that? What you heard is what I put on the project."
