This song sheds light on Yungblud's struggle with anxiety as he seeks out an answer for his demons. He makes use of technology, but finds that just messes with his emotional response. "If something terrible happens, I can just pick up my phone right away to numb the pain," Yungblud said. "But then because of that we end up resorting to drugs to try to feel something, or to escape the craziness of everything going on in the world. 'Medication' is a comment on how confusing all that is, especially for young people."
The trippy video depicts what's going on inside Yiungblud's head. "Welcome to the eyes of someone growing up in a heavily medicated society where reality and drug-induced fantasy is becoming very much intertwined," he told Billboard. The English artist added that he had two goals for "the Medication" clip, send a message and mess with the listener's mind. Or, in his own words, "Shining a light on darkness happening in the real world, yet leaving people thinking 'what the f--- did I just watch.'"
