Joji recorded "Die For You" for his third album, Smithereens. The record finds the Japanese singer-songwriter trying to pick up the pieces after a breakup while still feeling strong emotions for his ex. During this song, Joji tells his former romantic partner about his state of mind.
Joji knows he needs to move on, but he's lonely and lost without her head on his shoulders. He is pleased she's happy without him, but misses her presence in his life. Joji still loves his ex so much he'd die for her if he had to.
The song interpolates the chorus from Joji's 2018 track "R.I.P." where he repeats the line "I would die for you" several times.
