Somebody's Daughter

Tenille Townes got the idea to write "Somebody's Daughter" when she was in the car with her mom going furniture shopping. They saw a homeless woman holding a cardboard sign at a highway exit, and the two wondered what her backstory might have been. Townes was still reflecting on the woman when she hooked up with Barry Dean and Luke Laird for a songwriting session. They came up with a song where they compassionately imagine the circumstances that forced the lady out on the street.

Townes released the song as the lead single from The Lemonade Stand. The album's title is lifted from one of the lyrics. Bet she was somebody's best friend laughing Back when she was somebody's sister Countin' change at the lemonade stand The song's empathetic message of looking beyond appearances speaks to the deeper themes of the album. "It's this metaphor of a gathering place, a place where people can come into a community," Townes mused to The Boot. "Where strangers become friends, and people can just show up and be who they are - be reminded that they're not alone in their stories - and be filled up." "That's really what I want this music to do, is, hopefully, fill people up. So that's where the meaning comes from," she added.

"Somebody's Daughter" was released as Townes' first single after signing a deal with Columbia Nashville. "That was the sort of dream opening message [major-label debut single] that I could have imagined," she told Apple Music. "That story and starting from that place really, really meant so much to me, the desire to really be looking out for one another and things that we're going through. It's very much sort of anchored in this way of just being an observer and noticing really hard things. Being able to musically pair that with the anthemic production just made me so excited."
