The Art Angels album highlights Grimes' interest in the environment. While the subject matter of "Butterfly" concerns deforestation, the singer explained to NME, this song is about "inheriting a fallen world." "I wanted to be angry about that," she added. "I feel like nobody's angry at our parents' generation. Everyone's so f--king apathetic about everything. Our apathy will lead to the world becoming unliveable in our lifetime. It's on us. It's on my generation right now."

The Grimes written, directed, edited, coloured and art directed double video starts with "Flesh Without Blood" before moving onto the more mellow "Vivid Dream" for the second act. It features the Canadian auteur as a bloody, murderous angel, French-revolution-era marquise and a green cowboy.
