Tones and I wrote this song about a party she attended in LA where everyone thought they were the coolest thing ever. The Australian felt out of place, decided it wasn't her scene, and left.
A Q magazine article reports that when Tones and I performed the song at Glasgow's SWG3 on March 4, 2020, she introduced the song by recounting its backstory. The Aussie singer explained to the audience that a top LA producer asked her to feature on a track, but she turned him down. "I'm really happy to write my own music and be my own musician," Tones and I said. Nevertheless, she took up his invitation to attend a glitzy Hollywood party and took a friend along. They realized quickly they were surrounded by a lot of superficial people and they weren't enjoying themselves. "We decided to go back to the hotel and order Uber Eats and watch Netflix," she concluded.
Tones and I dropped an official remix on September 18, 2020, that features an added verse by singer-songwriter blackbear. The American rapper/singer also produced the new arrangement. Blackbear explained that he first heard the track when Tones played it live in Los Angeles. He fell in love with its chaotic energy, "all of us hearing a song about how fake we are," he said. Blackbear asked Tones after the show if he could do something, to which she readily agreed.
