I'd Rather Be an Old Man's Sweetheart (Than a Young Man's Fool)

In 1968, Candi Staton was unhappily married with four young children and desperate to escape her miserable life. Her husband wanted her to be a stay-at-home housewife, but she wanted to pursue her music career. Eventually she left him, and after Clarence Carter introduced her to Rick Hall at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, she launched her solo career as a Southern soul stylist. The first song she recorded with Rick Hall and the Fame Gang was "I'd Rather Be An Old Man's Sweetheart Than A Young Man's Fool." It was a hit, peaking at #9 on the R&B chart and #46 on the Hot 100.

Candi Staton's partnership with Rick Hall ran from 1968 to 1974, during which time she earned the title of the "First Lady of Southern Soul." They released four albums together, including her most successful, 1971's Stand By Your Man. She also received Grammy nominations for her R&B interpretations of "Stand By Your Man" and "In The Ghetto." Asked by Mojo magazine what it was like working with Rick Hall and the Fame Gang at Muscle Shoals in the late '60s and early '70s, Staton replied, "Rick was a character. In the studio he knew exactly what he wanted. He heard it in his head and he would get me to sing a song, and sometimes I'll sing that song 20 times in a row before it sounded just right to him and my throat would be so sore, it would be burning."

Raymond Moore, George Jackson and Clarence Carter originally wrote "I'd Rather Be An Old Man's Sweetheart Than A Young Man's Fool" for Aretha Franklin, but Rick Hall asked Jackson to let Staton have dibs on it. "I did it and I did it well," she recalled to Mojo. "It was night and Rick said, 'Call the guys, wake them up, get them here.' They weren't happy but they came to the studio and we got it down."
