Shift K3Y said regarding the song's origins: "I constantly watch guys treat their girls with little to no respect, 'Name and Number' stems from those emotions."
Shift started writing the song in his bedroom studio around the same time that he made his debut single, "Touch." He later revised the production and added new lyrics. "I felt that music had moved on quite a bit," he told Digital Spy. "So I kind of had to, yeah, just update it to a point where I was happy."
