Khalid spent his childhood in various military locations in the US and Germany as his mom, Sgt. First Class Linda Wolfe, served in the US army. He eventually settled in the Texas city of El Paso during his junior year of high school. Since then the city has inspired a number of Khalid's lyrics, including his debut single, "Location," which was written about a girl from back home in the US-Mexico border city. On this song, Khalid sings about how his heart lies in El Paso. During the pre-chorus and hook he sings in Spanish about wanting to escape to his hometown.
Khalid is joined on the track by New York based singer-songwriter Lorely Rodriguez, whose performing name is Empress Of. The pair previously collaborated when they both featured on the LA dance duo DJDS' 2017 track "Why Don't You Come On."
