This was one of Reed's breakthrough hits of his career. The song is about a young Cajun boy named Amos Moses who hunts alligators for sport.

Reed, who died in 2008 at age 71, was a country singer also known for his acting: he appeared in several movies and was a regular on the TV show Concrete Cowboys. This novelty song was one of two pop hits for Reed; "When You're Hot, You're Hot" hit #9 a few months later.
