Sharon Van Etten and Christian, a barman and DJ, decided to commit to each other at the beginning of the touring cycle for the singer's 2012 album Tramp. This followed seven years of drifting in and out of each other's lives. Van Etten told NME they "weren't ready to be together," but on this song, she sings about knowing that there would be, "trouble for a long time" from the moment they met.
