The evil eye was an ancient and widespread belief that certain individuals had the power to inflict injury or bad luck with a glance. Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos told NME: "My dad's Greek and in a lot of Mediterranean cultures they have the tradition of the evil eye. Certain people in my family have always felt that they have this extrasensory power that they can predict things, so I tried it."
The song's music video was directed by Diane Martel, who oversaw the clip for Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines." The visual pays tribute to low-budget horror films.
