The songs on Carrie & Lowell were inspired by the 2012 death of Sufjan Stevens' mother, Carrie, and his ensuing grief over his loss, despite the limited time they spent together. This track finds finds him crying out for love after being abused. He concludes: My prayer has always been love, What did I do to deserve this now? How did this happen? Asked by Uncut magazine whether the abusive relationship described in "Drawn To The Blood" was his own, Stevens simply answered "yes". "I found myself kind of feeling like my mother's ghost was inhabiting me," he added. "I had a lot of dark moments."
