This is the title track of English folk band Noah and the Whale's second studio album.
First Days Of Spring is a concept album based on leader Charlie Fink's relationship with singer Laura Marling and his emotional meltdown after she broke it off. Fink told The Sun August 28, 2009 that he gave Laura the album, "and I got a message from her saying she thought it was 'amazing.'" In this song Marling has broken up with Fink who is still hoping that the relationship can be resumed.
Using seasons as a metaphor for the heart is a frequently used poetic device. The Sun August 28, 2009 asked Fink if he's a poetry and nature fan? He replied: "Yes. The poem The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot was a particular inspiration. And I love nature-it's the ultimate in unrequited love. I am constantly in awe of its near-infinite beauty and yet it will only ever have complete indifference for me."
