This song was inspired by Metallica's dispute with Napster, saying that no matter what shots are thrown at them, they won't fall down dead. Sean Parker and Shawn Fanning launched Napster in 1999. The software allowed people to digitally share music from computer to computer, which was revolutionary at the time, but ethically uncertain. The service faced a major legal challenge when a demo of Metallica's "I Disappear" appeared on the network before the band intended for it to be released. Metallica filed a lawsuit on March 13, 2000. Metallica, et at. V. Napster, Inc. went down in the US District Court for the Northern District of California. Metallica won the case, forcing Napster to take all copyrighted Metallica music out of their system. Metallica dealt with a lot of controversy over the issue, including from some of their own fans who thought their music should be free to share. Metallica became the most vocal critic of Napster, insisting that file sharing was simply theft, abetted by the service.

Metallica released the St. Anger album five days prior to the announced released date of June 10, 2003, to make sure pirated versions didn't get shared earlier on Napster or other peer-to-peer networks.
