The song title comes from a shout-out for another Californian act. Me and my boyfriend listen to the Chili Peppers Prior to the release of her 2019 album Norman F---ing Rockwell, Del Rey told BBC Radio 1 that Red Hot Chili Peppers were a big inspiration on that album's sound.

Lana Del Rey recorded "Peppers" for her ninth album, Did You Know That There's A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd. The singer switched things up by collaborating with other artists on six out of the 16 tracks. This is a big deal because previously, Del Rey tended to do her own thing and not rely on anyone else. On this song, she teams up with a fellow Interscope artist, the Canadian rapper Tommy Genesis.
