Boygenius recorded this breezy rock track for their debut full-length album, The Record. We hear the trio warn their respective romantic partners they're "not strong enough" to support them. According to press materials, the song is about "paradoxically experiencing self-hatred while having a God complex."
In the opening verse, Bridgers delves into a state of self-disgust, berating herself for being too idle to tinker with digital clocks. The first chorus, featuring Baker, draws inspiration from Sheryl Crow's 1993 track "Strong Enough." The way I am Not strong enough to be your man Bridgers elaborated to Rolling Stone that the lyrics explore the dichotomy of the two wolves inside us: self-hatred and self-aggrandizement. She can't be the partner her lover wants her to be, feeling too messed up to show up for them. "Self-hatred is a god complex sometimes, where you think you're the most f---ed-up person who's ever lived," she explained. "Straight up, you're not. And it can make people behave really selfishly, and I love each of our interpretations of that concept." Julien Baker added, "That's another example of Phoebe taking a wordplay and then extrapolating it to a really nuanced concept."
Baker takes over the second verse, envisioning herself racing around Los Angeles while blasting The Cure. Drag racing through the canyon Singing "Boys Don't Cry" Do you see us getting scraped up off the pavement? Despite the apparent fun Baker is having, she fears something terrible is about to happen.
