This track is based on a 1967 quote from Martin Luther King in which he talks about the connection between his feelings on Vietnam and the African-American civil rights movement. King laments that the horrors of modern life "cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice and love."
King's address is one of three samples of notable speeches by American political figures on A Thousand Suns. The other two audio quotes are by workers rights activist Mario Savio (on Wretches and Kings ) and the father of the atom bomb Robert Oppenheimer (on The Radiance ). Vocalist and co-producer Mike Shinoda explained to NME: "I just felt in all three cases, those speeches when you hear them now, resonate in a way very differently from when they were first delivered. But they apply to things that are going on today."
