This was the first track to be made available from Kid Cudi's third studio album, Indicud. Cudi tweeted when it was released: "'Just What I Am' was designed for replay button rape. Enjoy and live it!"
The song features Cudi's friend and frequent collaborator King Chip. The Cleveland native changed his name from Chip Tha Ripper as a result of signing to the Creative Artists Agency in the summer of 2012. This was King Chip's first credit under his new stage name.
Cudi sings on the hook, "I need to smoke, I need to smoke," referencing his need for weed. Cudi gave up all drugs as a result of a cocaine problem, but it appears he has since returned to smoking grass.
