Written in 1927 by the Gershwin brothers - music by George; lyrics by Ira with Millie Raush - "Strike Up The Band" was the title song of a failed musical. Rewritten for 1930, it ran for 191 performances between January and June. The 1940 film version includes the title song during the opening credits and the finale, sung by Judy Garland. An instrumental version also became the theme for Radio SEAC (which was launched in 1925 in what was then Ceylon). Two famous BBC broadcasters worked for Radio SEAC - David Jacobs (1926-2013) and Desmond Carrington (1926-2017).
