Charlie Worsham penned this song with his pal Oscar Charles. It is one of 10 of the 13 tracks on Beginning of Things that Worsham wrote or co-wrote.

Worsham told People that this is his "theme song," calling it "a pep talk you can give yourself." The Mississippi singer added, "Of all the songs on the record, that's the one that, even now, I need to play for myself to remind me of perspective... It says no matter who you are or where you are in your life, there is no other person on the planet now or in the future who has the unique story you have to tell. And that story matters whether you're a teacher in a really poor school, which my mom has been, or someone who governs a state. Sharing your story is priceless."

The song expounds the philosophy of letting life happen around you without expecting things to be perfect. "I think in our society today, it's really easy to get the urge to try to perfect everything - not even for OCD people - but to try to make everything happy and fit the way that things look like they should on social media," Worsham explained to Billboard magazine. "The truth of the matter is that we humans have been on the earth for some time, and you can point to any part of our history and it doesn't work out like that. If you're a cave man, and you're building your fire in the mouth of a cave, the lion might be ready to pounce, and you've got to be ready to run. 'Cut Your Groove' is all about how to do life, I believe."
