Tones and I (Toni Watson) started her solo music career as a busker playing for tips at Byron Bay in New South Wales. That led to her meeting her manager, Jackson Walkden-Brown, and signing to Bad Batch Records/Sony Music Australia. She wrote this song while quarantining at home in Melbourne as she reflected on her journey from street busker to Platinum-selling musician.
Tones And I wrote the song about chasing and fulfilling her dreams and the way she thought she'd feel as opposed to the way she actually feels. "It's about genuine happiness and what we think we need to have happiness versus what we actually want," she explained. "The truth is, we only ever want anything because we think it will make us happy, but it's never that simple."
New Zealander Dann Hume produced the song. Hume won Producer of the Year at the ARIA Music Awards of 2019 for his work on Matt Corby's album Rainbow Valley.
