"Purge The Poison" finds Marina drawing on historic pop culture moments like Britney Spears' meltdown when she shaved her head and Harvey Weinstein's role in the #MeToo movement. She also takes on political topics such as the lack of female parliamentarians worldwide and the failures of capitalism. During the pre-chorus and chorus, Marina proposes that the COVID-19 pandemic has created the opportunity to purge the system of corrupting forces and we should start again with a new world order.
According to Marina, she penned the song in response to statistics that show just 2% of producers and 3% of engineers across popular music are female.
Marina released the song on April 14, 2021 as the follow-up to another feminist anthem, "Man's World."
