Carly Rae Jepsen told Digital Spy about this song, which she worked on with Australian singer-songwriter Sia. "It's got a very '80s flair to it, it's kind of girl anthem-y," she said, "I think we were going for that."
The disco-flavored song almost didn't happen as Carly Rae Jepsen felt it was too poppy. The Call Me Maybe singer told Billboard magazine it was nearly left off Emotion, because it sounds "just like the last album."
The video was directed by Canadian photographer and fashion designer Petra Collins and features Rookie magazine editor-in-chief Tavi Gevinson. Jepsen described how Collins had approached her about making visual for the song. "Out of the blue, Petra reached out to ask if she could make a video for her favorite track of the album - Boy Problems," the singer explained. "What she didn't know is that I had been following her online via Instagram and other outlets for a while and had become a HUGE fan of her photographs and artwork. I think she has a very gifted eye for a refreshing look at youth and beauty and the way she plays with color always stands out to me."
