Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Leila. By Songfacts®.

A rare ballad from ZZ Top, "Leila" is a lyrical and musical departure for the band, featuring a pedal steel guitar and a story about lonesome heartache. Seems Leila left him for his "ex-best friend out in old Tucson" - that's cold.

The title is pronounced "lee-la," not like the Derek and the Dominos classic.

The band wrote two sets of lyrics to this song: one sincere, another more goofy. They ended up using "the pretty ones." According to Billy Gibbons, lines in the goofy version included: She had a look in her eye that would make you melt Make you feel better than a brand-new belt and You know I love you girl more than my horse loves hay
