Live's fifth studio album, aptly titled V, was released one week after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Although the single wasn't due until December, the band put the emotional piano ballad "Overcome" up on their website as a gift for their fans who were struggling in the aftermath of the national tragedy. Lead singer Ed Kowalczyk recalled: "Within about a week or week and a half it was literally all over the radio, and I was just astounded at the response."
For Kowalczyk, this track defines the album. He explained, "When I think of this record, I think of 'Overcome,' because I could have never, ever in a million years seen those planes hit those towers or seen this song happen liked it happened."
The promo single peaked at #30 on the Alternative Airplay chart.
