Muse lead singer Matt Bellamy explained the inspiration for this track from the band's second studio album: "It's just about some hot girl, a chance meeting someone who you have a connection with. There's something a little bit dark about her, and it's asking why we're so desperately attracted to something of a dark nature." (Rock Sound, 2001) Origin of Symmetry wasn't officially released in the US until 2005 because Maverick Records (their stateside label) wanted the band to removed Matt's trademark falsetto to boost radio appeal, and the band refused.
